Invention
The invention of motorcycle helmets dates back to the
Arab vs. Ottoman Turkish Empire war when a neurosurgeon alarmed by the number
of deaths caused by head injuries decided to come up with a solution to prevent
such deaths.
Soon after inventing the helmets he successfully
persuaded the British government to make the use of helmets mandatory.
The helmet for bike has transformed in its appearance and safety value ever since its
conception. The helmets designed back in
the 20th century focused more on aesthetics than safety. Fabricated in leather, the helmets were often
soft and thin not offering the necessary protection it should against a major
impact.
Start
Of Evolution (The 1960s to 1980s)
This was realized in the 1960s when helmets got manufactured in fiberglass and cork lining offering more
protection than its predecessor. It still did not have suitable face protection
or any face protection for that matter.
By the mid-1970s
the concern for facial safeguard was addressed by including a solid protection
for the face. It soon gained popularity.
Helmets were on their way to evolution. In the 1980s the first aerodynamically stable helmet
which claimed to reduce drag was manufactured by the same company that
manufactured Porsche 911.
Modern
Day Helmets In The 21st Century
The modern helmet designs are safer and classier than
ever. They offer everything from aesthetic appeal, sound aerodynamic design, resistance
and safety against impacts, and also comply with government standards and
safety policies.
With motorist safety,
much talked about companies are even coming up with smart helmets which take the helmet evolution to the next level altogether. The design of such helmets is
abreast with the technological advancement.
Tech-savvy helmets give a complete heads-up-display
meaning it has a voice control system, rearview camera, GPS navigation
installed in it for the comfort and safety of the user. These helmets can also
be connected wire-free to your smartphones
for your hands-free operation of the
phone in case of emergencies. These are often
termed as racing helmets.
What
Does The Trend Suggest?
Such smart helmets have replaced the vintage style
helmets worn by the protagonists of The
Motorcycle Diaries. With the excessive modernization of life in general,
the companies are now manufacturing helmets to keep up with the rapid
technological advancement and leveraging technology for the comfort and safety
of the user.
Although such helmets are not cheap, they certainly do
offer a high level of safety for your life. And nothing can possibly be more expensive than your life.
